Looking back at 80 years of Cadman quality

Cadman’s history of building local communities runs deep in the Puget Sound region.

80 Years of Cadman Quality

Now in our eightieth year, we are still committed to providing quality products and services to local communities. In 1936, company founder, Horace Cadman, purchased our first gravel pit site from the Columbia Lumber Company. Little did he know this was just the start of his company’s decades-long journey to becoming an industry leader. Cadman’s long history in the region illustrates our dedication to our employees, our customers and the communities we serve.

Horace Cadman passed away in 1946 and employee, Tor Magnussen, purchased the company’s land and operations with financial help from his brother-in-law, Clarence Breedman. Under Magnussen and Breedman’s leadership, Cadman became a respected fixture in the Redmond community. In 1958, the company even donated a 55-foot evergreen tree, harvested from the pit property, for the city’s Christmas celebrations.

After years of steady growth, Magnussen and Breedman saw company expansion as an effective way to serve the needs of the surrounding growing communities. In 1963, they sold a portion of their company stock to raise capital for additional equipment and to purchase “the Gun Club,” a plot of land adjacent to the existing Redmond property. Magnussen’s son, Jon, and son-in-law, Paul Taylor, soon joined the team.

After his father passed away in 1985, Jon Magnussen, along with Paul Taylor, bought back all company stock and over the next few years, expanded Cadman’s business through the purchase of local competitor’s operations. This included the Industrial Rock location in 1984 (now our High Rock location), Valley Concrete in 1986 (including the Mill Creek plant), Connelly Sand & Gravel in 1987 (now the Sky River location), and Flintstone Sand & Gravel in 1989 (now the Black Diamond location). In 1990, Magnussen and Taylor added Lakeside Industries’ ready-mix operations, formerly Lakeside Sand & Gravel Company, to establish Cadman’s Issaquah and Bellevue sites.

The Seattle plant was added when Magnussen and Taylor sold Cadman to CBR, a Belgian cement company, in 1991. Between 1995 and 1996, CBR was transitioned to Lehigh-HCI and purchased by Heidelberg Cement Co.

Cadman is now a proud member of the Heidelberg Cement Group family of companies and employs more than 200 people across our locations, including additional sites in North Bend, Monroe and Gold Bar. Our eighty years of local history drive us to continue to build local communities while maintaining the highest levels of integrity, ethics and excellence in all aspects of our business.

We look forward to continuing to serve you and the communities of the Puget Sound for many years to come.

Meet our Newest Team Member: Patrick Gleason
Patrick Gleason

Welcome Patrick Gleason, our new sales representative on our aggregates team. Patrick joined Cadman in March after working at a few Seattle area tech startups. He’s most excited to join a company where employees take great pride in their work and build lasting careers.

“It was a welcome change to talk to people who showed immense pride in having been at Cadman for over thirty years,” Patrick said.

His position comes with new challenges and opportunities each day — no one day is the same. What is consistent is Patrick’s work to build genuine relationships with our customers. His ultimate goal is to better understand our customers’ unique businesses so as to provide the best product at the best price.

When he’s not assisting customers, Patrick enjoys watching sports, especially the Mariner’s and his alma mater, Washington State University. These days, you might find him working on his golf game after work, admittedly with mixed results.

“With my swing, I can tell this will be a long, painful process,” Patrick said.

No matter if you call him “Patty,” “Pat” or “Ginger,” Patrick looks forward to working with our customers to fulfill their aggregate needs. Welcome Patrick!

Employee Spotlight: Terry Fleming
Terry Fleming

It’s not possible to move 350,000 tons of quality aggregate product a year at our Black Diamond location without the hard work of front end loader driver, Terry Fleming. Terry has worked for Cadman for 19 years, previously working as a dump truck driver for RW Scott Construction.

He originally joined Cadman because of the company’s convenient location close to his home. Almost two decades later, Terry stays with the team because of the geunine camaraderie among its people — customers and employees — who motivate him to do his best work each day. His motto: “Work as hard or harder as the guy next to you.”

When Terry, or “Terrible” as he is jokingly called around the pit, isn’t behind the wheel of his front end loader, he enjoys spending time outdoors: boating, camping, doing yard work and going to the beach.

We thank Terry for his hard work over the past 19 years and look forward to more to come.

Recommended Product: Increte Systems Clear Seal
clearseal

To ensure exterior concrete surfaces look great year after year, it’s important to properly maintain and care for them with a trusted concrete sealer. Increte Systems Clear Seal, available at our building supply store, is a solvent-based, clear concrete cure and seal product we often recommend to contractors and savvy homeowners for their concrete maintenance needs.

Clear Seal is non-yellowing and will enhance the color of the concrete surface, creating a “wet” appearance. A matte, low-gloss finish can also be achieved. Because sealed concrete can be slippery, Increte Systems offers a texturing agent that, when added to the final seal layer, will create a non-slip surface.

Used directly from the container, Clear Seal is ideal for stamped, acid-stained and integrally-colored concrete, concrete pavers and decorative concrete overlays. For best results, we recommend the product be applied to bare concrete using an industrial sprayer and then back rolling.

If properly applied, the seal’s sheen should only begin to dull after three to four years of heavy use. To restore it, simply apply another coat of Clear Seal and your concrete surface will look good as new.

Tips for using this product:

  • Before applying Clear Seal, be sure to clean concrete surfaces and drain standing water.
  • To prevent product bubbling, whitening or peeling, avoid applying Clear Seal in thick layers or in too many coats.
  • Do not apply Clear Seal in weather or onto concrete surfaces below 40°F or above 95°F.
  • Do not use this product if rain is expected with 12 hours after application.
  • Only use this product in well-ventilated areas.
  • Be sure to read all instructions and safety information prior to using this product.
  • For more tips, please visit our building supply store and we’ll be happy to assist you.

Find 5-gallon and 1-gallon containers of Increte Systems Clear Seal at our Redmond building supply store.

2013 Cadman Annual Golf Tournement
Raises $4,778 for Monroe Miracle League

2013 Customer Golf Tournement

The Miracle League was formed as a youth baseball league for children with special needs. It offers these children an opportunity to suit up in a uniform, step up to the plate, and enjoy playing the game of baseball in its purest form. It is a dream most of them would not be able to realize as members of a traditional youth league. Everyone hits, everyone gets on base, and everyone comes home. No one keeps score. You would never know it by listening to the cheers of enthusiastic parents and siblings in the stands or teammates on the field.

Cadman would like to sincerely thank our sponsors and customers that made the 2013 Cadman Invitational such a success. Together, Cadman's community minded customers and partners helped raise $4,778 for the Monroe Miracle League.

And a big thanks to the staff at Echo Falls for hosting another wonderful tournament! We could not do any of this without our wonderful sponsors:

2006
PRESIDENT’S AWARD FOR SAFETY EXCELLENCE
High Rock Employees Keep Each Other Safe!

Cadman 2006 Safety Award

Cadman’s High Rock operation recently received the 2006 Lehigh TIER 2 GOLD AWARD for highest work hours without a time loss accident. Daily activities at High Rock include heavy equipment maintenance, drilling & blasting of hard rock, open-pit mining of sand & gravel, powered haulage of rocks as big as cars, as well as backfilling & reclamation grading. Those tasks are complimented by screening, crushing and washing processes, with every finished ton eventually being loaded onto highway trucks.

How does such a multi-talented and diversified group of people continue to add to their 880 accident free work days, as posted through year-end 2006? It comes down to the dedication and everyday mindset of each employee on the site. Supervisors telling workers to “Work Safely Today” just doesn’t do the trick. Writing policies and mandating procedures are necessary exercises, but they don’t keep workers safe on their own. Providing proper training and conducting quality safety meetings are helpful components, just as having the right tools for a task. However, all the training, tools and policies in the world are not enough.

A safe work environment takes people who look out for themselves and each other. It results from attentive people who approach every task with a watchful eye. It results from people who are diligent about their daily work-area or pre/post-trip equipment inspections. It results from people who speak up when they see a risk taken or a precaution skimmed over.

Safety policies, procedures and programs are important – but this award was achieved by the employees at High Rock. They earned it every day, with attention to every task, and a mindset of watching out for themselves and each other. Congratulations to each and every… 1,103 consecutive work days and increasing!
